Layers Of Fear

Post by Ghostlady »

I started Layers Of Fear and it seems like a really cool game. Love the atmosphere and graphics. But is has a weird save system and I have had to start over 3 times, it uses the WASD keys for mouse movement and you have to turn up the speed of the mouse to be able to open drawers and doors. My wrist still hurts today from a one hour play. So I am so disappointed. Has anyone else played this game? Am I missing something or doing anything wrong? Why would anyone use the WASD keys anymore?

Virtually all the games I play of any type use the WASD keys and the mouse. Can't say I've ever had any issues with my wrists even after playing for hours.

What do you mean by "speed up your mouse?" I've played so many games this way and always simply use the mouse left click and hold to say, open a drawer.

It's not pressing the keys so much as that you have to hold your arm over the keyboard for long periods of time.

With point-and-click you can just pick at the screen with the mouse and don't have the strain of holding your arm up all the time you're playing.

I'd recommend getting a wrist brace.
I have one that looks like this.
https://www.amazon.com/Rolyan-Tendonitis-Inflammation-Tendinitis-Support/dp/B002BUD77K/rqid=1605097543

The first one I got was from the orthopedist.
When I got the one for the other wrist, I was glad to see Amazon had them at half the price.

There are also wrist rests, but they don't seem to help me for this problem.

Ah, that might be it... My current keyboard is a Razer Black Widow and it has a very nice padded wrist rest. I tried taking it off so see what would happen and my wrists were immediately tired, so I put it back on.

If the wrist rest works for you, it's certainly less expensive than a brace.
But in my case I need the brace.

I have problems with both the wrist and the thumb.
Both arms, though the right arm is worse.

I have a friend who also needs a wrist brace in addition to a wrist rest. He has some mild arthritis and the seems to help enormously with hand and wrist fatigue. Plus he can continue to game on!

I use a wrist rest also with my keyboard helps a lot. I started the game Layers of Fear but like you the controls seemed harder than most games I have played.. opening the drawers.. doors etc.... I stopped playing may go back to it some day.

This is the second time I've tried to play it and you are right. The controls are much harder. I usually can play with WASD keys, I loved all the Sherlocks, but this game the controls are just so awkward.

Maybe this will explain it better: https://steamcommunity.com/app/391720/d ... 479552837/

I've found out how much I MISS my wrist rest this week! My desktop struggled to boot up Sunday morning and I never got any video. I had a new video card I wanted to install plus it needed a good blow out, so I opened it up and started working on it. No matter what I did, it would try to boot, but then turn off. New RAM, old RAM etc. I was then 99% sure it was the motherhoard, but before I spent a fortune on a rebuild wanted verification. So I took it in to the local shop. I can't go inside because hubby was exposed to COVID and we are in a 14 day Rona lockdown, but they came out to my truck and got it. Tech wiped it down with Chlorox wipes and was wearing a mask. YAY! Anyway, for $50 he verified the diagnosis of a toasted motherboard. I ordered a new board, upgraded the CPU and RAM and have been using my wonderful little Surface for 4 days. But OH how I miss my wrist rest!

I reloaded the game and tried playing with the controller... and yes it is much easier to open doors and do stuff. The game has a mouse and controller option that you can program in the game... I am in the middle of another game but when I do replay it will certainly be with a controller.

Sounds like it only does auto-saves. I found this in a Steam discussion forum for the game.
