An experiment with Pagoda

Post by Kickaha »

As some of you know I maintain Pagoda. Now that I've retired I have time to tinker with it a little.

I'm experimenting with listing where games are available on GOG, Steam, and the iOS store. There are technical difficulties with doing this which I won't bore you with, but currently only a few games will have links to their availability on Steam etc. Depending on how this experiment goes I may abandon it if it proves impossible to do properly.

Pagoda to quite an extent reflects my needs - so I don't tend to list games which I'm not so interested in playing like VR games or walking simulators. But I am interested in Adventures available on iOS for instance.

I will also try to sort the URLs involved - there may be some hiccups with the site while I do this.

Sounds like a big job! It would be a great resource if you manage it.

I haven't used Pagoda in awhile. Must go visit! And good luck with that massive job...

I am going to be playing around with redirection and SSL certificates soon on Pagoda. If people have problems accessing the site through pagoda_game database.com then it should remain accessible through https://alofmethbin.com/pagoda/.

In the future the latter address will be a development version of the PHP scripts driving the site.

I use PAGODA fairly often.
Unlike other game list sites, like Mobygames, PAGODA actually knows what an adventure game is.
Not an RPG or action game.
Not a platformer.
Not a strategy game.
Not necessarily 3rd person.

One of the things I sometimes check at PAGODA is the developer listed for a game.
Then I do a "Search" for that developer at PAGODA to see what other games that developer might have made.

There’s an experimental version of Pagoda at https://alofmethbin.com/pagoda/ which I’d appreciate feedback on before I make it the live version.

The big change is now you can filter the games displayed to be those available on Steam or GOG or the iOS App Store. The list of those games isn’t complete, there may be mistakes too.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I can't get it to list any games.
Neither the Steam, GOG, nor iOS options list games.

Everything worked for me except for the same things middletoe mentioned.

I think it worked right for me. I hit the filter and selected GOG. Then I went to the games under A-Z. It shows 12 games under the A's. Then I went back to the filter and changed it to Steam. Went back to the games under A-Z . It shows 51 games under the A's. I went back to the filter and changed it to IOS. Went back to the games under A-Z. I shows 6 games under the A's.

You are right GL. I did the filter only and nothing showed. Then I went to games beginning with A and came up with a list of 12 or so. Then I tried the filter and nothing happened. I didn't realize the filter had already been applied with my list of 12 because I never thought to change the search criteria. Duh!

Yup, that's what I did too. I did filter and clicking on any of the options did nothing.

Thanks for trying this out guys - so would it be better if the Filter was like a drop-down and refreshed the page you were on? Rather than a separate page on which you specify which filter is being applied and then you go to other pages and the filter is applied on them?
