Thanks you. Ill try not to bore you.Jude wrote:Subscribed, as usual.

Don't worry "Peace Talks" Dresden #16 is out in the summer, he has always said the there will be 20 novels and then an Armageddon final trilogy so Harry will be around for a while yet.LadyKestrel wrote:I'll be keeping an eye on the new Butcher one. I'm hoping the start of a new series doesn't mean the end of Harry.

So Jim Butcher has taken a small break from his hughly successful Harry Dresden novels to start a new series. He has done this before in 2004-2009 he alternated Dresden Novels with a Fantasy series called Cedex Alera (1-6), which was fairly successful. So while he still has about eight Dresden novel planned, The Aeronaut's Winlass is rumoured to be a nine book series it doesn't seem too much of a stretch for him to alternate again.Since time immemorial, the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls, aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace.
Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship, Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy’s shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels. But when the Predator is severely damaged in combat, leaving captain and crew grounded, Grimm is offered a proposition from the Spirearch of Albion—to join a team of agents on a vital mission in exchange for fully restoring Predator to its fighting glory.
And even as Grimm undertakes this dangerous task, he will learn that the conflict between the Spires is merely a premonition of things to come. Humanity’s ancient enemy, silent for more than ten thousand years, has begun to stir once more. And death will follow in its wake…
This is pretty much a hard science book, they spend more time on the mechanics and realities of spaceflight than on the actual characters. I was fascinated by the concept of the book and being a sucker for all things space I found the realistic and detailed descriptions of the journey to Saturn to be very good. The year is 2066. A Caltech intern inadvertently notices an anomaly from a space telescope—something is approaching Saturn, and decelerating. Space objects don’t decelerate. Spaceships do.
A flurry of top-level government meetings produces the inescapable conclusion: Whatever built that ship is at least one hundred years ahead in hard and soft technology, and whoever can get their hands on it exclusively and bring it back will have an advantage so large, no other nation can compete. A conclusion the Chinese definitely agree with when they find out.
The race is on, and an remarkable adventure begins—an epic tale of courage, treachery, resourcefulness, secrets, surprises, and astonishing human and technological discovery, as the members of a hastily thrown-together crew find their strength and wits tested against adversaries both of this earth and beyond. What happens is nothing like you expect—and everything you could want from one of the world’s greatest masters of suspense.
I really enjoyed this book. A world where libraries rule the world and electronic books are free to access, however owning paper books are illegal. Rare volumes are hunted stored and protected by the libraries. Alexandria rules with an iron fist which means smuggling and book burners are rebels in a war of power, manipulation and control of knowledge./A dangerous world where the Great Library of Alexandria has survived the test of time.…
Ruthless and supremely powerful, the Great Library is now a presence in every major city, governing the flow of knowledge to the masses. Alchemy allows the Library to deliver the content of the greatest works of history instantly—but the personal ownership of books is expressly forbidden.
Jess Brightwell believes in the value of the Library, but the majority of his knowledge comes from illegal books obtained by his family, who are involved in the thriving black market. Jess has been sent to be his family’s spy, but his loyalties are tested in the final months of his training to enter the Library’s service.
When his friend inadvertently commits heresy by creating a device that could change the world, Jess discovers that those who control the Great Library believe that knowledge is more valuable than any human life—and soon both heretics and books will burn…

I first read this novel and greatly enjoyed it back in 2011/12. It was nominated for a Hugo and other awards when it was released and has now grown into a 9 book series of which Five have been published (books six due in August). It has also spawned a recent 10 episode TV show on SYFY called "The Expanse", season 1 of which is based on Leviathan Wakes.Humanity has colonized the solar system - Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt and beyond - but the stars are still out of our reach.
Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, "The Scopuli," they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for - and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.
Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to "The Scopuli" and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.
Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations - and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.
