Grim Fandango remastered

Post by mbday630 »

I have played this game many times before and didn't have a problem. Today when i wanted to play it, the screen was black. I could hear the music, but, no graphics or video. well, I can see the opening screen and I see Manny, but everything else is black so, I tried to load a saved game and it was still black. Any ideas on why? Thanks.

edit: I downloaded updates for my nvidia card and still nothing. however, when I right click on the option at the bottom right of my screen it says "currently not using a display attached to an nvidia GPU. I don't know what that means - or how to change it. I wonder if the lady that fixed my computer last month did something?

That sounds like your monitor isn't plugged into your video card.
Is it possible that it's plugged into an onboard video card instead?

Check and make sure the monitor is plugged into the right place.
If you're not sure, there's a labelled picture on this Dell help site that shows where the onboard video connector is compared to the video card.

That's also the first thing I was going to suggest. Make sure you're plugged into a card and not the onboard video. Are you trying to play it on your new computer?

thank you, thank you, thank you! I showed hubby the picture and he found a different slot to put the monitor cable into and now I can see everything on Grim Fandango! whew. now, on an unrelated question, I have a bigger monitor that I asked him to hook up to this computer but there was nothing to plug the sound into. the monitor that I am using now has a cable to it that I can plug into the back of the computer. How do I get sound if I would try to use this bigger monitor?

First figure out what type of cable your computer is intended to use for sound.
A stereo 1/8" audio cable (or SPDIF optical cable) (both require a separate cable)
A HDMI cable
If the computer is meant to use HDMI for sound as well as video, it may already be connected, but not configured in software.

HDMI sound

I've never used HDMI sound, but it should go through the HDMI cable (assuming you're using one) along with the video signal. The ends of the cable look like this:

Here's a picture of how HDMI looks on a video card
https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers ... my-hdtv%3F

The above is an older card and you no doubt have a newer one. Some new video cards have nothing but HDMI slots and don't have DVI or VGA.

If your computer is already using a HDMI slot for video, it's possible the computer is already set up for sound physically but the software is not. Sometimes the computer's sound card (or onboard sound) favors HDMI over an audio cable and sometimes the other way around. If you're using a HDMI connection for video (to connect the video card to the monitor, the software automatically assumes you want to use HDMI for sound too. For the past few years or so, when I've set up a computer I've had to disable the HDMI sound and set the sound card to use a 1/8" audio cable because that's what I use (all my cables and speakers use 1/8" audio). This is done in the audio software's options. You can either explore around the sound options and see what's there (which is what I usually do) or check the manual (which I'm usually too lazy to do).

Do you have a separate sound card or are you using the onboard sound (built into the motherboard). Or are you using the HDMI connection on a video card? You'd want the manual for the motherboard if you're using onboard sound.

As for speakers, none of my speakers have HDMI connections (they are too old) so I'd need an adapter of some sort if I wanted to use them.

This assumes the bigger monitor has sound. Are you sure it does? Does the MONITOR have a sound cable? Or does it just use HDMI?

I set up the HDMI sound on a monitor for a friend and it was awful - really tinny. And it was a very nice ASUS montior.

What model is the monitor?

If it didn't come with an audio cable, it may not have speakers. I think every monitor I've owned that had speakers in it came with an audio cable.

Of course your monitor might also have been intended to be used with HDMI cables, in which case they wouldn't bother sending you 1/8" audio cables. You'll have to check the monitor to see if it has any jacks for a 1/8" cable.

Or check the specs of the monitor to see if it has built-in speakers at all.

A nice monitor for viewing doesn't mean it will have good sound. Most monitor speakers are really bad, no matter how good the rest of the monitor is.

But it depends on what you're used to. If someone is used to monitor speakers that use a 1/8" audio cable they probably won't be able to tell a difference from monitor speakers that use a HDMI cable for sound.

The closest I've found to good monitor speakers was on an old iMac all-in-one.
They were very close to separate speakers (not huge ones, but the type with 3" or 4" cones).

I remember the monitor speakers on my son's ancient old iMac all-in-one. They weren't bad at all.
