Usually, the default login into the router is admin and the password is "password." You can change it when you're logged in if you'd like.

This really sounds like you got someone who wanted to rip you off. Netgear will not charge you for setting up one of their routers. You will need to do the initial setup on your router using the instructions that came with it. They usually provide an default admin account as Jen said. I just set up a new router a couple of weeks ago and that's what I had to do. Contact your ISP to make sure there is nothing they need to do on their end.

Setting up a new router is not as simple as plugging it in and connecting to it.

hubby is taking the router back to the store as he is sure it is not the new router, it is my computer that isn't recognizing the router or sending the signal to the modem. He said that he will just go down to walmart and buy me a computer there. we really need the router to work so that my grandkids can be on their tablet and stuff. I am too old to set up a whole new computer again. I'll keep you posted if this new computer that he buys me does the trick. I told him that I don't need a very good computer anymore as I am done buying new games.

So, you're not going to try the cheap little USP WiFi adapter first?

Well, don't get rid of your old desktop! It may take just a $20 fix to get it back on the internet. Although if it's still Windows 7, it's definitely best to keep it off the internet.
