Extracting Music From Steam Games

Post by Ghostlady »

Does anyone know how to extract music from a game that was purchased from Steam?

Well, at its simplest you just need to find a program that can unpack the particular compression file containing the audio, which can be challenging. The only unpacker I know of myself for game audio is Wwise Unpacker that can unpack .pck and .bnk files. It's more than likely that you'll need to find a specific unpacker for each file type.

There are quite a few hits on tutorials for extracting game music and there are a lot of specifics involved you'll just have to peruse them until you find what you need. Though often just Googling the game and the file extraction you need to extract might be a good place to start.

I can't offer mor ethan that without knowing what you're specifically trying to extract, but for exctraction in general it's usually going to be a case by case basis.

Also, since we're talking about video game music, there is a large collection of it at Game Theme Songs. Lots of nostalgia to be had there.

I was wanting to extract a piece of music from Lamplight City to put with the screenshots. I did some googling and see what you are referring to about the extractors. In this case, it happened that all the music was in a .vox file, which is old school and I used Audacity to extract it. I can see that the newer games may be more challenging.

As far as game music goes, I guess you have not checked out the Ballroom?

And thanks for the link to the music. I may use some of that for Halloween.

Glad you found your solution.

There's a few othe rmusic links from that website including TV themes, commercials, and Halloween Songs

Another good source for game music is YouTube. Sometimes you can find music from games that someone esle already extracted (Lamplight City is there even). Just takes a YouTube to MP3 converter/downloader website to get the music to you computer.

Okay, so took a gander through the ballroom. I was delightfully surprised to find a piece of music from from Ghosts. A very obscure title, one I happen to own on CD. Perhaps you'd like the audio file (.wav) of the opening theme music to add to the collection?

So I didn't know about the YouTube to MP3 Converter. Very good to know!
I do have the CD for Ghosts. :) Thank you very much for the offer!
I always took caution how much music I put in the Ballroom back then so I just picked one or two of the tracks. Now it seems like game music is a free-for-all.

We have a very nice review for Ghosts in the Conservatory.

This is the converter I use. https://ytmp3.cc/en13/ Real simple to use. Just drop the video's URL into the box and press convert and you'll soon get a download prompt.
