They ARE already MS Word documents. As Lucien and I said, .docx is the file extension for all MS Word documents now.

Do you remember which version of Office you have? 2007, 2010 or whatever?

They might all be Word documents but they are not showing as such like they used to. I have reinstalled my Microsoft Office 2010 but when I right click on my desktop, I am not given the option to create a new Word document. I have googled and the only solution I can find is to go into the Registry, and I really dont like doing that!

What happens when you open up Word 2010 and try to create a new document? Can you open up Word and then open up an existing document?

Remember that right clicking on the desktop and then selecting Create New Word document does NOT create a new Word document. It creates a SHORTCUT to a new Word document.

If you still cannot create a new document after opening Word, then this is what I would try next. I assume you uninstalled Office 2010 before, but if you didn't, completely uninstall it and then run CCleaner on the registry. That may get rid of any remaining Word registry entries. THEN try reinstalling Office 2010.

Forgive me if I am being even more stupid than usual here - I create a lot of documents on my desktop such as recipes etc because I keep them in a special Desktop folder - I should have maybe mentioned this before lol. Therefore my icons are not shortcuts, but the documents themselves. I just wonder why I no longer see the blue W next to each document like I used to.

Yes I can open up Office and create a document, but I still dont have the right click option to create a new Word document on my desktop!

You're not stupid at all! If you are creating these documents on the desktop and storing them on your desktop, then you are correct. Their path will be C:\Users\yourusername\Desktop instead of C:\Users\yourusername\Documents.

Now we need to delete your "new document" option in the right click menu. There are some third party programs which will help you do this, but the ones I found yesterday are for earlier operating systems. However, they should work. Otherwise, I'm afraid you will have to go into the registry. I did quite a bit of searching yesterday and this was the best one I found.

Rosy...Are you saying that when you right click on the Desktop and you get the menu of options (view, sort, refresh, etc and NEW) that the "New" menu (with folder, shortcut, etc) no longer gives you the Microsoft Office Word Document option?

Here's a tutorial on a fix, might help:

Rosy...Below the manual registry hack, there is a downloadable one that will make the changes for you. If Drac thinks that may be the best solution, you could try that.
You could back up your registry using CCleaner in case anything goes wrong.
Have you tried using Microsoft Office Diagnosis and Repair?

JK, I assume those programs would work, but as I said above, they are for older operating systems... Windows 7 and Vista.

Looked for CCleaner on my PC but it had mysteriously disappeared.

Reinstalled and CCleaner - but I still cant create a new Word document on my desktop

In your opinion, is there any point in buying CCleaner Pro? Or is the free version good enough?

Rb - how about creating your documents in Office in the normal way, if you can, and then transfer them (copy and paste) to an appropriate folder on your desktop. Save you an awful lot of hassles, wouldn't it?
