Is this DIY monitor cleaner safe?

Post by Rosaboobie »

I have just read this on Facebook:-

Homemade Computer/TV Screen Cleaner

1 part plain white vinegar
1 part distilled water (make sure you use distilled only!)
A clean, lint-free cloth. (I like using old, worn-out t-shirts from my rag collection)

Mix the vinegar and water. Store in a labeled container (I use an small canning jar). A spray bottle would also work.

When you are ready to clean your screens, spray a soft, lint-free cloth with the solution, OR dip the cloth into the jar.

DO NOT spray the solution directly on your screen, as it can drip down into places it shouldn’t go.

Gently, wipe the screen with the damp cloth. It may take more than one application, depending on how dirty things are.

It actually seems to be very popular. https://www.google.ca/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=eUT ... er+monitor. I've used it frequently to clean windows and it's better than Windex or other cleaners as it doesn't leave streaks.

Yes I have also used this for my windows but am a little nervous about using it on my monitor or tv screens

I also use the vinegar and distilled water for my monitors and TV screen. It's very safe for them - one thing I would do differently is to be sure to use one of the microfiber cloths to be sure you don't leave any microscopic scratches behind. And I was glad to see it says to always spray the cloth, not the monitor.

Rosa, when friends lived in Halifax right on the harbour, they found their windows were always covered in salt from the sea spray and this apparently needed special cleaners to get it off. Do you find the same problem?

I am actually not that close to the sea, Diat, so I don't have this problem.

so very true - I once cleaned my monitor with some paper and it was just as I was cleaning it with a knife.  It's very important to use the right cloth or tissue.

A little rain sounds better than the 100°F temps we're having here in the middle of the US!

Am I right in thinking that, with these modern monitors, you should not press too hard when cleaning them?

That's one advantage of my iMac: It has a glass covering over the screen. Much less worry when it comes to cleaning it, and it protects the fragile screen. It does make it heavy, though...

I reckon that so many of these screens must get damaged by people pressing too hard!

I have a question - I ordered distilled water from my local shop, and they have sent me de-ionised water - Is this the same as distilled water, and can I use it safely on my monitors?
