What Are You Reading?

Post by Ghostlady »

The Univited by Cat Winters
Interestingly, it takes place during the great influenza epidemic of 1918. I am about half way through and I am enjoying it.

I just finished the latest of the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter books by Laurell K. Hamiltom. There are over 25 books and I've read them all!

Now in the middle of The Au Pair by Emma Rous. It's a mystery about a suicide and far too many babies! Really enjoying it.
Seraphine Mayes and her twin brother, Danny, were born in the middle of summer at their family's estate on the Norfolk coast. Within hours of their birth, their mother threw herself from the cliffs, the au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark cloaks, changelings, and the aloof couple who drew a young nanny into their inner circle.

Now an adult, Seraphine mourns the recent death of her father. While going through his belongings, she uncovers a family photograph that raises dangerous questions. It was taken on the day the twins were born, and in the photo, their mother, surrounded by her husband and her young son, is smiling serenely and holding just one baby.

Who is the child, and what really happened that day?

lIn the middle of a rather delicious "evil castle in the Alps in the winter" story called The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni. I'm going to hate when this one is over!

Oh, my, the book I'm reading right now! It's The Marsh King's Daughter by Karen Dionne. Have been staying up WAY too late to read it! Interspersed are parts of The Marsh King's Daughter by Hans Christian Anderson, which are very dark.
Helena Pelletier has a loving husband, two beautiful daughters, and a business that fills her days. But she also has a secret: she is the product of an abduction. Her mother was kidnapped as a teenager by her father and kept in a remote cabin in the marshlands of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Helena, born two years after the abduction, loved her home in nature, and despite her father’s sometimes brutal behavior, she loved him, too...until she learned precisely how savage he could be.

More than twenty years later, she has buried her past so soundly that even her husband doesn’t know the truth. But now her father has killed two guards, escaped from prison, and disappeared into the marsh. The police begin a manhunt, but Helena knows they don’t stand a chance. Knows that only one person has the skills to find the survivalist the world calls the Marsh King—because only one person was ever trained by him: his daughter.

I'm reading Resolution by Denisa Mina, the conclusion of the Garnethill trilogy (not sure if I've mentioned the previous ones). Crime drama set in Glasgow - it's got some serious grimness in it but well enough written that it's not unbearable. The characters have a real life to them and there's friendship and laughter and a great sense of place (as well as awful things happening). Recommended, though obviously I'd start at the beginning of the trilogy.
