Dreamcatcher Games

Post by Ghostlady »

Seems like the majority of my older games were published by Dreamcatcher games. There were so many... But the interesting thing is I don't see many people talking about the Dreamcatcher games when they are playing older games. It seems weird.

Were The Adventure Company and Dreamcatcher two different parts of the same company? I have some memory of the old TAC forums where I first met people like Hawka and danyboy and we were playing Dracula The Last Sanctuary. I seem to remember there was one forum for each of them. But then, that is MY memory which is none too good!

Do you mean the games themselves, GL, or that people don't talk about Dreamcatcher? I'd say the games (or some of them at least) are very much part of the adventure canon, but because Dreamcatcher were a publisher rather than a developer I'd be less likely to group the games that way. I'd think of In Cold Blood as a Revolution game, Amerzone as a Sokal game, Riddle of the Sphinx as a small independent production and so on.

Dreamcatcher was my go-to place to buy adventure games when I first started playing because they had many Mac titles. As Phlebas said, the games are still discussed and played, especially by those who like first person exploration games.

By the way, the revamped Riddle of the Sphinx has started its beta testing. I'm looking forward to playing it.

I guess I do mean "The Adventure Company. I know there are the classics, like Dracula and Agatha Christie but what about:
Aura
Mysterious Island
Cameron Files
Thorgal's Quest
Secret Files Tunguska
Safecracker
Nibiru
Sentinal
Forever Worlds
Schizm
Mystery of the Nautilus

Didn’t some developers have problems getting money from Dreamcatcher Games? Like Phlebas I’ll group games by their developer so I have a soft spot for Cryo.

I think I do remember something like that.

But, all the older games I see people playing are Sierra, TellTale, Microids but not many from The Adventure Company. And there were so many games by TAC. So, just weird to me.

Odd - I can understand some of them being forgotten but I'd have thought some - Safecracker and RTMI spring to mind - were outright classics! And I think most people liked Secret Files more than I did, too.

I replay the Atlantis games quite happily. Each to their own.

First it was Dreamcatcher Games, then they tried a rapid expansion and swallowed up a couple of smaller publishers and changed name to The Adventure Company. They got a little too big for their britches and a little hubris-y and then imploded. If memory serves... That was a long time ago.

That sounds vaguely familiar, Jen. I think it might have been back in 2002 when I first met Hawka and Danyboy on the TAC forums.
