Help me remember an old game name
Help me remember an old game name
There was this game, I want to say back in the early to mid-90s, that was on a lot of collectors’ rarity lists in the 2000s. It was a series of postcards exchanged between two lovers. Each postcard had some clicky areas, and the player had to do some figgerin’ to advance, but it was more of an interactive story than a game. I remember it as very moving and beautifully done, but I can’t remember the name. Wayne (Gelert), are you still around here? If anybody would know, it’s probably you.

Ceremony of Innocence?
Re: Help me remember an old game name
I was a member of Gelert's website, but I have seen hide nor hair of him or the website in a long time!

He’s a friend on my FB. I’ll ping him later.

Yes, it's based on the book Griffin and Sabine by Nick Bantock, the first of a trilogy. The books are wonderfully interactive with envelopes to open and letters and postcards to read. By the way, I got the game from you when you had your big clean-out, Jen.

I did not know they were books. I just put all three of them in my cart on Amazon.
I have quite a few pop up books and a couple with other types of interactivity. One in particular that these books brought to mind is The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Letters. It’s a children’s book that can be enjoyed by all ages. The pages have envelopes that contain things to take out and read and look at as you make the rounds with the postman. I’m a sucker for things like that.

I am, too. I'm also fascinated by some of the elaborate designs of pop-up cards. I've made a few simple ones over the years, but most look like they require an engineering degree to design.

By the way, Bantock's other books are well worth a look. There are two more books of the trilogy which are a sequel of sorts: The Gryphon and The Morning Star. His others are The Museum at Purgatory, The Forgetting Room, and The Venetian's Wife. Although not interactive, the art and stories are strange and wonderful in them.

My kids had the Jolly Postman. They loved it! My teacher daughter bought a copy years ago for her class and still uses it today.

I love the Jolly Postman book, we had it at a daycare I worked at. Haven't managed to get it for my boy, but have founda cute Winnie the Pooh one that is similar.

My sister is a neonatal nurse practitioner. When she was in grad school, one of her assignments was to design her ideal NICU. We worked together to make a pop up model of it. It wasn’t very elaborate but it had a lot of things. She says she still has it somewhere. I should get her to pull it out.
Re: Help me remember an old game name
I had ordered three of the Nick Bantock books. I got the first one, and it’s beautiful, but the next two never came. I looked on Amazon and it said my delivery was lost and that I could request a refund and that the books might still show up eventually. I did request the refund. But now I’m sad I’ll likely never get the books. Oh well, not like I really *need* dumb picture books. But I’ll probably try again at some point
