I remember this so well. And Jonathon and Matt have since gotten married - a couple of years ago I think. Wonderful!

Well I never - I seem to have missed that photo Phlebas! And of course you are right - Cornwall. I should have known from the accents and funnily enough I have been to Polperro but a long time ago.
Nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed the game and loved the art concept of black and white and only splashes of colour throughout.

Last night around 10:00 PM, I decided to play RealMyst Masterpiece, which I had purchased a while ago from the Mac Game Store. (I had played RealMyst when it first came out and loved it, but knew it wouldn't work on my newer machine.) I decided to try Channelwood first. I had remembered quite a bit about how to get there and the age itself, since I also played Myst Masterpiece at least 2 times in the past, but I still forgot how to get to the uppermost level. Since RealMyst ages have day/night cycles and I arrived in the late afternoon, I spent a good part of my exploring time with a flashlight in the dark. I stopped playing at 3:00 AM, saved my game, and as I was brushing my teeth, I remembered what I have to do next. I'll be playing again this afternoon.

Gotcha didn't it! I love when a game does this! It's been awhile.

I finished the Channelwood and Mechanical Ages. The first time I played Myst, I remember how stuck I got on the elevator puzzle until I realized what to do after pushing the middle button. Once that was solved, it was a cinch to retrieve both book pages because the linking book was easy to access.

Last night I made it to the Stoneship Age and saved my game. This one always gives me goosebumps because of the threat that something would happen to the pumps, and I'd be trapped down below.

I finished RealMyst Masterpiece and really enjoyed revisiting all the ages. The game was designed to be played with the mouse or the WASD keys with mouse. I chose the mouse but found that the movement was sometimes not as smooth as it was in the original RealMyst. Also, some of the background scenes didn't seem quite as detailed, especially the under-water views in the Stoneship Age. A couple of times I found myself wishing for an up arrow to see more. They did, however, make the piano puzzle much easier. The levers moved up the scale as if notched, so someone without a good sense of pitch could just count the increments. Before, they would just slide up freely, which made solving it harder.

That piano puzzle took me ages to do even when I knew what to do

I had that same problem with the "Masterpiece" version of RealMyst, even on a computer that more than met the "Recommended" requirements the game was not smooth. Eventually I went back and replayed the original RealMyst, which I thought had better colors anyway.

The original had better fish and stuff that were underwater downstairs in the Stoneship age. Remember how you could watch the fish down there? They did a much better job on the animation of the original RealMyst's fish.

I think they chose the new game engine for better compatibility with Intel Macs and mobile. The original RealMyst for Mac was for PowerMacs. I don't know why they changed the colors though. The game looks so much like other games made with the same Unity game engine instead of being unique, like the original RealMyst.
