Murphy’s Law—it’s a real thing

Post by Jen »

Last month my home warranty expired. Yesterday my range croaked. I could’ve made all of my appliances last forever just by renewing the home warranty 🙄

I presume renewing your home warranty was quite expensive?

oh no. Murphy's law is a real thing. not really to do with Murphy's law, but, I decided to "test my body" and tried to do jumping jacks. well, with my knees being so bad, I couldn't jump up at all. but, I tried and tried. and that night I woke up 2 times with the worst charlie horses in my legs. so, don't try to test your body either. something will make it miserable.

Testing your body means nothing more than walking a lot! Those of us of a certain age NEVER do jumping jacks because we know it will not turn out well.

Jen, that just figures. Were you unable to renew it?

I had my oven die 3 days before Thanksgiving a few years ago and I was cooking for 8 people! The heating sensor died causing the oven to overheat and ruining that evenings dinner. I made some calls the next morning and was told the cost to repair it and likelihood the parts would take some time. I live a few minutes from an appliance store. They had a nice selection in stock that I could have delivered the next day. The salesclerk asked me if I used the self cleaning feature then advised against it as it likely ruined the sensor. So I got one with steam cleaning which cleans the oven at a lower temperature. Thanksgiving dinner went off without a hitch!

Good story, JK! I never knew that about the high temp cleaning. Mine uses steam cleaning, so I guess that's a good thing!

This post was really about Murphy’s Law part two. Part one: I didn’t renew the home warranty out of pique because the only thing that broke down when it was active was my clothes dryer and come to find out the laundry machines were the only appliances excluded from the coverage. And the cost to have the clothes dryer repaired was less than half the cost of the home warranty.

Well, Jen, I don't blame you in the least for not renewing. That would have ticked me off as well. The timing of your range dying really sucks and yes...it is Murphy's law. It's like your car warranty expiring and then everything breaks. You always have to choose whether to purchase extended warranties or, weighing the cost, put that money in the bank annually so that, if/when something breaks you have the money for a repair or a new appliance.

I understand perfectly! I seldom purchase extended warranties, but I recently got burned on a phone which went belly up just 6 months out of warranty!

The only time an extended warranty went well for me was a number of years ago. I purchased an HP Windows XP laptop that cost around $1600. I decided to purchase the extended warranty at the same time for a few hundred more. The warranty went for three years. Just prior to the end of the 3 years, my graphics went. I had no picture. So I figured it was the graphics card which was imbedded on the motherboard. I took it into Best Buy and they wrote it up and said they'd need to send it somewhere. The guy asked if I had backed up my files. I replied I didn't have a chance and that it wasn't a hard drive issue anyway. They shouldn't touch it. He agreed. Two weeks later I received the unit back. When I went to pick it up, I asked what they had done. The guy replied: "They replaced your hard drive." Needless to say, I was incredulous. I even had to reinstall Windows myself. Upon doing so, of course I had the same issue. I went back to Best Buy and talked to the same guy. He apologized profusely and said he'd expedite the revised repair. A few days later, I got a call from the Best Buy repair place with a question of whether I wanted them to retrieve my files from my hard drive. The cost would be $400...not covered by the extended warranty...even though they removed the hard drive in error. I told him to go ahead and then called Best Buy customer care to complain. The associate I spoke with perfectly understood my complaint and offered me a $400 Best Buy gift card to make me whole. Thank you, I'll take it. A few days later I received a call from the local Best Buy. Your laptop is in. The guy at the counter decided to boot it up this time, to make sure all was well. We did. It was. Then he handed me a 4 CD set of all my files that were on my hard drive. With my gift card in hand I asked what I owed him. He said: "Nothing." I replied: "Nothing at all...even for the files?" He said "Nope...you had the extended warranty. Your good." I thanked him, grabbed my laptop and with my $400 gift card, ran like a thief.

It's nice when a story has a happy ending! I used the gift card, BTW, on a flat screen TV two weeks later.

My new range is on order but won’t be delivered until March 27. The same day the old one croaked, I went to Target and got an electric kettle to boil water for my morning coffee (it was an emergency—I can’t live without my morning coffee). Then last night I planned out my dinner and was halfway through prep before I remembered I don’t have a stovetop to cook it on. So I ordered a single-burner hotplate for $16 on Amazon. It’s a good thing it was cheap since will be going to Goodwill on March 28! But meanwhile I will at least be able to cook in a single pot or pan.
