Favorite Breakfast
Re: Favorite Breakfast
I never got into hominy grits when I visited the States - I do like porridge with syrup added.
Re: Favorite Breakfast
What exactly is porridge for you, Kickaha? I love oatmeal, but is porridge made from something else? I've always been curious!

Re: Favorite Breakfast
Porridge is made with whole rolled oats, not ground into oatmeal - it therefore has a bit more texture to it.
Re: Favorite Breakfast
The oatmeal I like is also whole rolled oats. In the US, if it's ground into a fine powder, it's called oat flour. In fact, the more texture the better for me, so I even prefer what is called steel-cut oats or Irish Oats. I like my oats - or porridge - with a bit of brown sugar and a sprinkle of cinnamon!

Re: Favorite Breakfast
There’s a quote I think by Dr Johnson about the Scots eating oats which the English feed to their horses, something like that. Phlebas is spot on.

I love it!

Re: Favorite Breakfast
I like raisins and nuts in mine with just a teaspoon of honey.
I’m more confused than a chameleon in a bagful of Skittles.

How did I forget about porridge???
Last night I dreamed I went to Manderley again...
Re: Favorite Breakfast
Deli meat (2 pieces) , 2 pieces of cheese , & 2 eggs fried hard in extra virgin olive oil is my usual . Sometimes I'll eat grits , a little butter , salt, & shredded cheese .

Re: Favorite Breakfast
Biscuits and gravy is THE thing in southern states in the US. Where I'm from in NW Iowa, they'd never heard of it! The gravy is made with fried bits of breakfast sausage and pan drippings with onion, flour and milk. My husband is pre-diabetic, so he can no longer eat the biscuits. But I found an on-line seller of low carb mixes and other foods. The stuff is quite pricey, but I only make his biscuits and gravy, easy over fried eggs and bacon on Saturday mornings... I think I can handle $2 a week and he still gets a low carb breakfast! I ran out of the mix once and made my usual home made baking powder biscuits and he said he has decided he likes the low carb mix better!

Re: Favorite Breakfast
Only way I could ever drink coffee , if it is doped up with enough cream & sugar , I couldn't taste the coffee itself . Dad , however , can drink it year round . Lately , I've developed a taste for tea or grapefruit juice with breakfast . Either those or oj , with enough pulp you can basically chew it
