My little Pooka

Post by mbday630 »

We had to put our little 4 lb Maltese dog down this morning. she had congestive heart failure. We kept her alive and happy for about a year but, she was so bad that last few days that we decided to put her down. It is heartbreaking. No more dogs for me. It is too painful to lose them. God should have made it that pets would live as long as the owners. This 15 year thing for dogs just doesn't work. sorry God, but, you messed up.

I'm so sorry mbday630. I know how heartbreaking this is. I recently put down a cat that had feline leukemia. Sending you lots of hugs to help get you through these next days.

So sorry, mbday. I know it's like losing a member of the family. After we had to put our last dog down a couple of years ago, we had decided not to get another one. But someone dumped out a beautiful pure-bred Bloodhound down by the river in the winter. After a couple of weeks, she adopted us. So we are back in the same boat, but we have fallen in love with her just the same.

I agree with you that it's messed up that we have so little time with our fur family.

Sorry for your Loss.

My parents were the same after our last dog died they swore they wouldn't so it again and they have never gotten another one.

Since as far back as I can remember and up to this very day we have always had plenty of pets in our family. They have always been rescues or strays. Dozens of animals have come and gone in our lives. Dozens more for my mom who spent 16 years as a vet tech after moving to Florida in her 50s. When on animal would leave us for whatever reason it wasn't long before she'd find another to bring to family.

About ten years ago, when he was around 11 years old, my youngest son (an extreme dog lover himself) asked her why she kept getting more animals after being so sad about losing one to old age or medical problems. My mom told him that it would make her even sadder knowing that there was a dog or a cat out there that would have a worse life if she didn't offer it a loving home. As far as she is concerned giving an animal a long, healthy life in a loving home is worth it.

My mom would suggest getting a another pet as soon as you can. Give a lonely dog a home. I'm not doing that, just suggesting that may you can take the edge off the hurt a bit by remembering that your pet always gets the better end of the bargain as a part of your family and things could have been a lot sadder for your pets had you not taken them in.
We are each a ghost in someone else's story.

It's sad when you lose your furry companions. You did your best for her, Mbday. Hugs from me, too.

I agree with DracheHex... a good friend just lost a young rescue dog that she was just in love with. She grieved so hard and really questioned getting another one. But then, someone from the local rescue called her and she opened her heart up to another one. It's so hard.

I am so sorry to hear this. My sincere condolences. I know how you feel, when we had to put our little MoMo down I went crazy and punched the stairs and almost broke my hand. Poor hubby almost ripped the steering wheel off the car. It is so hard, and you are right 15 years is not enough. Could they at least have 25 or 30 years for us to enjoy. A parrot can live up to 80 years. We never bothered to get another pet, with my nerves I couldn't handle it. Someone over at Game Boomers told me that the best thing we can do for our pets is to out live them. It's a hard thing to do at times like this.

It's going to be hard for a while but remember you have a lot of shoulders to cry on here. Don't suffer alone. Hang in there and know we will be thinking of you and sending our hugs. Take care :(
