Garden is finally planted

Post by mbday630 »

We put in more tomato plants as I have 2 kids now that want to can and do stuff with tomatoes. plus, I put in sugar snap peas as my grandson loves raw peas. My hubby made another garden in our yard just for all this extra stuff.
Also, hubby is taking a liking to Bread and butter pickles so I am planning on making them this year from our pickles that we planted. wow.... gardening is so much work. I work up a sweat watching the hubby do all this!

Ha, ha! We got the early stuff in about a month ago... it turned cold shortly after, so germination was spotty. Don't think I'm going to get any snap peas. Hubby replanted a couple of rows of sweet corn.
We did get in 108 tomato plants about a week ago. They we proceeded to have very high winds and two nights when it dipped down to near 32°! Hubby filled up 4 five-gallon buckets with water and put them in the little wagon behind the tractor the night before. He got up at 5:15 to go out with a sprinkling can to sprinkle them all with water to keep them from freezing! Didn't lose any to the cold, but did lose about half a dozen to the wind. But I have plenty of replacements. Still haven't been able to get in and plant the pepper plants because it's done nothing but rain since then!

I've made Bread and Butter pickles for years, but found out a couple of years ago that the Mrs. Wages Bread and Butter pickle mixes are better than anything I can make! I also use the Mrs. Wages dill pickle mixes too.

What kind of tomatoes did you end up planting?

I have to try and remember that mrs. Wages pickles for when I make them. I don't know if anything will come up though - it has rained buckets since we put in the garden and I am almost afraid that everything is going to get drowned out. My garden is pure mud now.

I put in several different kinds of tomatoes this year. I used to do celebrity and early girl. this year is big boy, better boy and beefsteak.

it is supposed to rain more today and then again this weekend, so I am just keeping my fingers crossed that something lives.

Our germination was awful because of tons of rain and wind and cold. Dreadful start. I can't even get in to the garden to replace the tomato plants lost to the wind.

Oh, you will be very happy with those varieties! If you even find one called Big Beef, that's a good one too. It's the only hybrid I grow, but it's a good one. I've found it does particularly well when it's hot and dry. I've grown Celebrity and it was OK, but nothing to write home about. I thought the Early Girl was only marginally better than grocery store tomatoes for taste! And if you ever see Cherokee Purple, grow a couple. Hands down, the best tasting tomato ever - including Brandywine!
