Windows 10 Driver Update?

Post by Stella »

Windows 10 Driver Update, is this another scam? It keeps popping up on my screen, wanting me to register, then for a price, it will upgrade my drivers. I do happen to have the drivers it mentions, but in the past I remember the drivers being free. Have things changed, a scam, or is this another Senior moment?

Likely it's malware trying to get you to pay for a service that may or may not be legit. Have you run a scan?

Malwarebytes tells me it's a scam. This is the second time I've been targeted for legit products being sold for exorbitant prices. The first was windows ccleaner and now windows drivers..

Thanks for reminding me about the malware program. I forgot I had that.

Your welcome, Stella. You just can't be too careful. There's crap lurking on websites that you don't even know about until you're infected. I have Webroot security and it'll stop me from going to websites that are potentially dangerous. I don't recall too many (if any) false positives either. If I'm heading for potential trouble, it stops me with an alert, then gives the option "Get Me Out of Here!" I always take them up on their suggestion.

Whatever you do, don't click on this popup. As JK says, this is malware and a scan with CCleaner and Malwarebytes should get rid of it. There is one - and only one - place to get drivers from and that's from the hardware manufacturer's website.

That is so true, Drac. The unfortunate part is with Laptops especially, the manufacturers do not update the drivers. So...my drivers are technically horribly outdated. They are, however, working fine on this laptop...which is now 7 years old. I actually tried to update my graphics driver directly through ATI only to get the blue screen of death upon install. So...I won't chance that again.

Sometimes I think they do that to "encourage" you to buy a new laptop.

Hubby has been having that on his laptop too and wants to get rid of it. I will have him download malwarebytes and try to get rid of it.

edit: I downloaded the free malwarebytes and did a scan on his computer but it didn't find anything. Do you have to have the premium version to find this?

I installed DriverMax recently, as Drac well knows, and whether coincidence or not - since then I was without my desktop for a couple of weeks as it had to go on the ferry to town to be sorted out - because I started to get endless problems and eventually the Hard Drive failed. A lesson well learned!

DriverMax is well known for being a scam. They charge you for driver downloads which you could get for free from a hardware manufacturer. Plus, they often package ads and spam with the download wrapper.

No, mbday, you don't have to download the paid version of Malwarebytes. If that didn't find anything, have him run CCleaner and then clear out his browser cache.

For some reason, ccleaner did not catch this, but when I ran Malwarebytes, it did.
