Trouble in Kilifi

I was shocked to read this awful news on the BBC website this morning. I know these people well. I am just so glad I have left there.

I've seen a lot of stories recently about troubles in Kenya, i.e. dubious politicians, religious differences, intolerance, etc. I hope the country is not going the way of Zimbabwe. As you say, good thing you're out of it, although it's hard when you know people left behind.

It does seem to be going the same way as Zimbabwe, Diat. I had not seen these other incidents you are referring to.

Oh nothing new in those reports, Diat - Kenya is one of the most corrupt countries in the world - one of the reasons I left there.

I read the story about the crooked police and my reaction was "WOW, WOW, OMG!". Then I read down the page looking at all the other stories. You couldn't make it up, could you? Obviously I haven't had time to read all the stories, but the overall impression is of a culture of corruption. Thanks for the link, I'm going to look at it in more detail when I have more time.

In Kilifi, it was not the criminals we feared the most, but the Police - so I know this from first hand knowledge to be the truth.

Yet more trouble in my little town of Kilifi - this time on another parcel of land - also people I knew well. Thank goodness I got out when I did - otherwise I fear that, with these increasing squatter incidents, I would never have sold my house and been trapped there forever.

The article states that only Kenyan citizens are allowed to own freehold land under the Kenya Constitution, so how come I was allowed to purchase my property? Something is not right somewhere.

I found this, more reasons for "foreigners" to get the H out.

"Article 65 of the Constitution of Kenya stipulates that non Kenyan citizens may have leasehold tenure of land in Kenya, and such lease granted in whichever way shall not exceed 99 years. That essentially means that locals and foreigners are permitted to own land within the Republic."

Well, the 2010 Constitution for sure didn't revoke my freehold property, Diat! And thank goodness they didn't, cos it was hard enough to sell anyway.
