When It Rains...

Post by LadyKestrel »

...it does pour, especially when your water heater springs a leak. My sister and I had been moving books and furniture all day, when we heard a hissing coming from our laundry room. My first thought was a gas leak, but I didn't smell anything, so I cautiously investigated and found water all over the floor. I called my neighbor, and we shut off the gas, but the water valve was frozen. I called the service I have through my gas company, and they sent out someone to take a look, but he couldn't budge that valve either, even with a liberal application of machine oil, so I ended up having to shut off the main water line. I'm now trying to get someone to put in a new water heater for me. My brother-in-law has a handyman who has done work for him and some friends, but he said not to expect him to be home on a Saturday night. I've left a message for him and will hope for the best tomorrow. In the meantime, it's bottled water (and maybe a glass of wine) to the rescue.

Sorry to hear this, LadyK. Seems like a betrayal when our own homes let us down!

Isn't that just always the way? That these emergencies just wait for the weekend!

Are you able to use your toilet? That was my first thought lol.

Another man from NJR Home Services came out early this morning and managed to work the water heater valve into the off position, so my main water system is back on. I got a ballpark estimate for a new water heater from my brother-in-law's handyman and will also get one from the service company. Hopefully, one of them will be able to do it soon so I won't have to go too long without hot water.

Yes, the water heater was installed yesterday, thanks to the handyman. It was wonderful to be able to take a shower again.

Train of thought about no hot water. I imagined you having to heat kettles and pour them in the bath, etc. It took me back to a memory of my grandmother's house in the Laurentians with my cousins and I having baths in a big galvanized tub in front of the wood stove. Happy days.

I remember those baths in the galvanized tub with my sister. We didn't have a wood stove, so it wasn't quite as toasty warm though!

I never had the pleasure of using a portable tub. Wherever we lived, we always had a bathroom with a built-in tub. However, I do remember using my nana's outdoor shower in the summer after walking back from the beach.

I still have 3 of the old ones. We use them when we are blanching tomatoes, dumping them into ice water while we peel them. No more baths in them!
