Sanday in mourning

Post by Rosaboobie »

Today we lost our celebrated resident Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, one of the U.K.s most prolific composers, to an aggressive form of leukaemia. He had just finished composing an opera based on Orkney folk lore which is due to be performed for the first time in June. His house is on the opposite side of Roos Loch to where I am. When we have a becalmed day, his house is mirrored on the Loch - an awesome sight. Max, as he was known locally, will be sadly missed.

Oh, how awful! I know you've talked about your resident celebrity before.

His works often have been featured on our classical music station, as both a composer and a conductor. Some of his pieces are challenging for me to listen to, but some are very pleasing.

Sorry to hear about Sandays loss. I remember you talking about him but have yet to hear his compositions. Am sure he will be missed.

I hadn't realized (or had forgotten) he lived on Sanday! I was sad to hear of his passing - he seemed like quite a character (as well as a talented composer, of course). I remember the story of his swan terrine...

Oh yes, someone else told me about this swan terrine also, Phlebas.

I just looked up his entry on Wikipedia and was taken with the "Sanday Light Railway". Sounds like it could have been most useful, too bad it's closed down.

A railway might keep the mad drivers off the road, Diat. Yet another poor cat killed in my area yesterday by a speeding car!

Well, it's Max's funeral tomorrow and he is going off to the Kirk and graveyard in style - on the back of a tractor and trailer no less - how very quaint - and before you ask, yes we do have a hearse/funeral car here.

Well done to Orkeny Ferries who have laid on an extra ferry in his honour tomorrow, as we are expecting a major influx of cars and visitors - probably the likes of which this little island has never seen - people coming from all over the world apparently, and this is not an easy place to travel to.

How's the weather forecast? No great storms and winds forecast I hope. It would be awkward if Sanday also became an hard place to travel from..............

Would you believe - we have had NO wind for 3 days now - it's really quite eerie as we are so used to hearing and feeling the constant wind. It actually reached 11 degrees here one day this week - a veritable heatwave for this time of year ha ha!

Weather forecast says cloudy but dry, Diat, for tomorrow. I will watch the funeral procession from my conservatory.
