That's what poly tunnels were invented for

I don't think poly tunnels would QUITE work for me! This is just ONE of my two tomato "forests" I grow every year!

So, Drac, do you get in and pinch out all those plants? I only plant a few but there's a lot of side shoots to be pinched. And what about taking the bottom stems and leaves off? That "forest" looks like you could get lost in it!

I'm just reading a Stuart MacBride detective story (Det. Sgt. Logan McRae) set in Aberdeen. He mentions that in Aberdeen they call the dustmen (garbagemen to us) "scaffies". Do they call them that on Sanday too?

Diat, I am firmly in the camp of never suckering my tomato plants. My husband has even come over to my way of thinking. When you sucker/pinch off the side shoots, you are removing the main flowering stems. If you want bigger tomatoes, you let those side shoots grow and just pinch off half of the blooms. I just let them all grow and my harvests so far out did his with the same number of plants and same tomato varieties, he finally just grinned and said, "You're right!"

I do remove the bottom two levels of the big stems. These plants are all on 4' centers and are growing in 5' tall tomato cages made of heavy duty concrete reinforcement mesh. Although this looks crowded and dense, there is still plenty of room to move around in there. Once you are in there, you are lost to the rest of the world though! Some of them grow to 7' tall and more - depends on the variety. I always wear a white T-shirt in there because you do come out totally green - bleach wash, baby. Bleach wash!

Yes, LadyK, maybe a dome!

Interesting, I'll have to try that if summer ever comes again. Why not try a tomato green tee and save on the bleach?

Bleach is cheap, Diat! Maybe try it on one plant and do what you normally do on the rest? It is said perfectly sane gardeners can come to blows over the sucker or not to sucker divide!

I usually have anywhere from 120 - 140 tomato plants, so it would be VERY time consuming for me for no benefit from my experience.

When you said you grew tomatoes, I never dreamed it was on this scale. But I should have known you did it on a large scale ha ha.

Never heard of the word scaffies Diat - I think Orkney has a completely different "language" to the rest of Scotland, having such a strong Viking connection. So many of our place names are derived from the Vikings. Like Drac said, Orkney including Sanday is steeped in history and archaeological sites. We have a prehistoric village on mainland Orkney - Skara Brae - which is far far older than the Pyramids of Giza.

Yup, I could just get lost with fascination in your history! Since I was a little girl old enough to read, I've been interested in how early people lived. Would love to visit a Neolithic site like Skara Brae.
