New iMac

Post by LadyKestrel »

An Apple Store, run by Gamestop, opened up a store in the mall near me, so I couldn't resist. I bought a new super-duper iMac with more ram and power than I'll ever need. It's running 10.10, so I'll be able to play the new Intel games. I also signed up for classes because there are quite a few bells and whistles that I don't know how to use yet. I haven't fired it up yet because I have to get some of my cable connections changed in order to run it in the spare room. Because the one I'm using now is packed with programs I won't be able to use on the new system, I'll be keeping this one as well.

OH, good for you, LadyK! It's always so exciting to fire up a new computer!

Wow! I'm excited for you. :)

Should I assume that the cable connections are for hooking up to the internet in another room, and not something that is different because of the new Mac itself?

You assume correctly, Jude. Since my current computer is my reliable workhorse with Rosetta and AppleWorks 6, I'll keep it in my home office. The new one will be in my guest room which doesn't yet have an internet connection.

Good for you LadyK, enjoy your new purchase. I wish I could get a new computer, I hate my Dell. Hubby keeps wanting to format it, but no go till I finish making my game. :flower:

Why do you hate it, Starlite? If I remember, this is pretty new and a very nice one. If it's all the junk on it, I posted right after you got it about how to get rid of all that.

LadyKestrel, have you considered just using the built-in Airport WiFi that comes with the iMac? If your router has wireless capabilities (most do), that will work without having to install new wires/cables. If not, I BELIEVE that you can piggyback via WiFi from your other computer that is wired up, via its Airport capabilities. (This used to be possible using Airport between 2 or more Macs with built-in Airport, even if you didn't have a separate Airport station -- it probably still is, although I am not familiar with the newer Macs.)

I've thought about using Airport, Jude, but just haven't bothered with it, although I probably will eventually. The cable line I'm putting in will allow me to use an older laptop that doesn't have WiFi.

Sounds like you will have the perfect setup once Comcast gets everything set up!

Although, I assume that an older Mac laptop could use a USB WiFi adapter just like a Windows computer could?
