Rumors of My Death Were Premature

So happy to read this

Re: Rumors of My Death Were Premature
Actually up until about a year ago, Maloo was only eating once every 2 or 3 days on average - as she looked fine with this regime, I really was not worried. I would put her food down for her every morning, and most days she would just sniff it and walk away - I tried coaxing her with all sorts - but still no change. Then the vet came to my house one day and I pointed Benji out to her and said "Is this dog fat or is it muscle?". She scornfully said to me "Of ourse it's fat - he is far too fat - and Maloo could do with a little less weight also". Well, seems like I had been overfeeding the 2 of them - dont know how this happened as I normally measure their food out - so both of them went on a diet - with Benji on quite an extreme one.draclvr wrote:I remember talking about the food thing with you, Rosaboobie. Is it Maloo that gets such digestive upset? What do you feed your dogs?
The upshot of this was that Benji is now only half the dog he was and he looks just SO fit. And Maloo? Maloo now eats every single day, unless she has a tummy upset which is not that often any more - I stopped giving her liver and veg. Its like when someone puts a HUGE meal in front of you, and you are suddenly put off even eating just a little - and so it must have been with Maloo.
They get a daily mixture of ground beef, fish and chicken measured into an egg cup, along with some rice, all mixed in with gravy. Its the diet they have had since pups - they only ever get processed food when I come off the ferry late and I give them one of those little pouches between them as a "treat" - Otherwise its just home cooked food for them and they seem to thrive on it.

I really must get onto home made food for my dog. The wet food has always given her stomach upset so she grew up on dry. I had to take her to the vet last week (on a public holiday!) because she was swaying and vomiting. Luckily only bee stings - two of them! But I do have to find some money to get her teeth cleaned...

He does better each passing day. This morning, he's basking in the sun out in the yard and has already made one sojourn down to the stinky pond for a little swim.

Yes, it does! But they don't come in the house, so it's OK.

There is so much crap in pet food, and anything with grains, flour, gluten, etc. could have melamine in it. That's what killed so many cats and small dogs years ago (including my cat :( ) -- the Chinese factories were adding melamine to fool the protein sensor tests, and it turns into a substance similar to glass shards inside the kidneys.
It's really hard to find decent food (even "people" food has all sorts of horrible stuff added, and pet food is not really regulated), and even when you do, then they change the ingredients and/or quality.
I subscribe to this site:

because she tries to get info and to force companies and those supposedly overseeing them to be more responsible.
I've been feeding my cat Orijen Cat & Kitten food for a few years (but it is very expensive), and pieces of meat (with as few additives as I can find -- and no garlic or onions!), but who knows when even that company will decide to cut corners and make animals sick?
