My power blinked

Post by Jude »

The last time I was here a few days ago, I had just clicked "view new posts" and my power went out which shut down my Mac. It came back on shortly afterwards, but when I restarted my Mac and came back here, there were no new posts listed anymore. So I think I missed a lot. :( I did a quick scan of "Unread" posts today and saw that I had missed LadyKestrel's birthday. :( So, sorry if I didn't respond to something I should have.

Our power is blinking all the time Jude. We are on load shedding schedules which range from Stage 1 (one area in a region), Stage 2 (two areas in a region), Stage 3a (three areas in a region) and Stage 3b (4 areas in a region). Thankfully we have yet to experience Stage 3b!! Last night my daughter was expecting Stage 1 where she lives 6.00 to 8.30pm and I was commiserating with her as it is a terrible time to have no power when without prior notice it was changed to Stage 2 and I was in the dark as well. Fortunately I had just plated up my dinner. :)
But we are all on standby with iPads and phones charged. It is bloody annoying but even more so for businesses.
A case of lack of maintenance on existing power stations and slow progress on much needed new ones.
This could go on for years!! Life in a Third World country. :(

The last time we had a power outage, we realized we were short of candles, etc. So I bought lots of candles, an oil lamp, new batteries for flashlights. So naturally we haven't had an outage since!

Murphy's Law Diat60!!
We here have bowed to the inevitable and are pretty well prepared. Some of the lucky ones have generators which they can use but most of us have gas stoves or gas hotplates, powerful torches with rechargable batteries and huge fat candles that last longer than the normal ones. It is better than our last huge blackout which could last for a morning or longer. This time we have, as I said, the schedules and they only last 2 half hours which is ok once a day (stage 1) but really horrid when it is a stage 3a - twice a day.

Am off to the theatre this evening in another municipal area and am holding thumbs that they don't decide to pull the switch there this evening. Candlelight is ok but not for watching the opening night of a production. :)

I cant understand why they load shed at night or when it's dark, Val. At least in Kenya, when there were electricity power supply problems, they always always managed to get us back with power before if got dark, if only for security reasons.

My friend at Fort Beaufort runs a panel beating business and they are tearing their hair out almost daily, having to run expensive generators both at home and at work - I think they are on Stage 2 at the moment, but stepping up to Stage 4 in a few weeks time.

The problem here RB is that there is not enough power to go around so they are having these outages staggered across the country to build up their reserves I guess. It is not solely for maintenance from what I can gather. Government woke up too late that millions of people cannot be given free electricity without more power stations being built, or old power stations being maintained. So there are two new p/stations in the process of being built but it is taking forever because of strikes, bad construction (one tower collapsed on one of the new stations), etc. The completion date has been moved forward from end of last year to 2017! What gets to most of us is that South Africa are still providing power to several other countries when it is so much needed here. Ah well!

When I whine about the high cost of my electric bill, I will think of you all in SA! I just got mine for last month and it was $118. In the summer, it might climb to near $300 when we have the air conditioning on. But this is a 100 year old farmhouse and although we have insulated and gotten new windows etc., it still is not as efficient as a new house would be.

Ok Drac - here is my latest electricity bill due on May 11. R914.84 ($76.37) so not as high as yours! Wow! But as I do not have air conditioning, a single person living in the 3 bedroom house, a small pool and garden it is pretty steep. Thanks for thinking of us in SA Drac! A lot of moans but Cape Town is really a fabulous place to live in. Would take a lot to make me move. :) Keep a room open for me in case, hey?

Why, of course! I have two spare bedrooms upstairs! The pool will be open at the end of May where you both can lounge about all day on the deck!

Ah bliss!! Glad I will have a loophole, Drac! :) Mind you, I reckon I will do everything to get my kids and grandkids out of here before me!!! I guess if they don't pull finger (you know that expression?), ie Government, it will take another 20 years for things to really fall apart and I'll be kicking up daisies by then. :)
But forever hopeful that things will come right sometime.

"Pulling a finger" here in the US has a somewhat different connotation that may actually be appropriate!
