Easter Pete

Post by StarLite »

Since February a rabbit has decided to take up making nightly visits to our yard. I'm guessing he/she is after the bird seed that the birds have wasted on the ground. The whole backyard is full of rabbit pellets, I didn't know that much can come from such a small creature. Well yesterday morning when I got up and opened the kitchen curtains, there's itself sitting in the middle of our yard. I found this unusual for the rabbit to be out during the day. I kept an eye out for the hawk for him

He/she is a little skiddish so hubby was careful opening the backyard to throw out a carrot. Didn't want the carrot, more interested in the bird seed. Probably needed the roughage, ya, like it needs it. I took to calling it Pete. Hubby calls him Easter Pete because he showed up at Easter weekend. So folks here he/she is Easter Pete. The one pic is a little blurry, I cleaned it up as best I could. Enjoy, click the pic to enlarge :bunny

We've got one too, looks just like yours! As you say, lots and lots of droppings mostly around the shrubs in front of the house. We suspect he's (or she's) got a burrow there. I've tried carrot, cabbage, lettuce but no takers. But they do like the fresh young shoots on the shrubs leaving them somewhat bald at the bottom. Everything out there likes the bird seed!

That could very well be an Easter Penelope with a nest nearby!

Oh, beware of Easter Penelopes - As you know, I am overrun with rabbits here - I want to set up a veggie garden but first I have to put up some expensive rabbit-proof fencing - These little varmints can jump over walls 6 feet or more - gggrrrrrr.

I only have a very small back garden but last year there were over 100 of the little blighters living and breeding there in such a small space!

Yeah, there wouldn't be much point in having a garden! Our dogs pretty much keep the rabbits and squirrels at bay. However, the neighbors raised an orphan fawn last year and we have a feeling she will be living in our gardens eating the green beans!

That's what kills me about Pete. Hubby threw him a carrot and he wouldn't eat it, yet if I had carrots growing in my backyard, he'd have a field day. Pete had some company the other night, Stinky was out there chasing him around. Stinky paid us a visit last week and sprayed under the car. It took about a day to get the stink out of the car. It seems that Pete has taken up residence under our back stairs, not sure if that's a good idea or not, will keep you posted :flower:

The idea that rabbits like carrots is a myth perpetuated by several cartoon characters. They do not normally eat root vegetables at all and in fact carrots are not good for rabbits because of the high carbohydrate content. Now if you have carrots in your garden they will devour the leafy tops for sure! Just Google it... this one is factual and pretty funny!

"Cartoons have been hard on the world's pet rabbits. You can tell because every single website about rabbits, and rabbit breeders, and rabbit feeding all have to carry this warning: If you try to feed a rabbit nothing but carrots, it will die. It's like giving a human nothing but cotton candy. If your rabbit happens to like carrots, you have to carefully ration the stuff. Non-cartoon rabbits eat mostly hay and green leafy things. If you give a rabbit a carrot with the green top still on it, it will disregard the carrot part and eat just the top. It'll be like, "What's this orange s***?"

This is good info Drac, thanks for posting it. But someone got good use from that carrot because it was gone the next day.

Well old Pete showed up the other night with his girlfriend. That's just great. I almost felt a story there, The Adventures Of Pete & Penelope. I wish I was good at writing children's books, I'm sure they would love hearing about their adventures. Will let you know if the pitter patter of little Pete's show up. I do hope not :flower:

You might live to regret those words, Starlite. I hear they are rather prolific reproducers!!!

Believe me Boobie I am terrified. I don't think they will bother my roses but still they use our whole backyard for a toilet, I swear they must go every time they move. Hubby says it's good for the grass but who wants to walk through it mowing. Hubby says that they are hanging around our yard because they feel safe.

Much as I love the man, if he builds them a house out there he's going to be living in it. Yes folks, I hope he's just joking to get me going but he wants to build Pete a house. We both miss having a pet around and I think that's why he is buddying up to Pete, but pets are not in our future, we don't have the health anymore nor do I have the mental stability for it. Well it's almost that time so I'm off. Take care everyone and keep your fingers crossed for no little Petes :bunny
