My Radar often behaves like that as well. She'll run in, grab a rawhide bagel or a toy, toss it in the air a few times until it lands under the furniture. Then she'll tear back and forth from my sister's bed to Zorks bed in the living room where she jumps on him and gets him to chase her around the coffee and dining room tables. Zork lost 11 pounds after she got here. Unfortunately, Zork recently tore the ligaments in one of his rear knees, so he's not running around much right now. I've been giving him pills to ease the inflammation, but he's scheduled for surgery in a couple of weeks because the tear is bad enough that it won't heal on its own.

Oh poor Zork - will surgery make him all good again?

Hopefully the surgery will do the trick, RB. The vet, who has the same problem with his knees, said the weakness can be hereditary or Zork may just have zigged when he should have zagged while chasing a squirrel.

If it is the pesky cruciate ligament, our large dog has had both of her back knees done. She is good as new now. The rehab was long though... we had to keep her quiet for at least 2 weeks and then gradually take her for longer walks on a leash. This was not easy with an outdoor dog who is not used to any kind of confinement. I would say the rehab took at least 6 weeks each time, but it was worth all the trouble.

Yes, it is the cruciate ligament, Drac. I may have to get the crate down from the attic to keep him confined because Radar will get him going when he should be resting.

We were lucky - I have the hummingbird porch which is about 8' by 16' and is covered. So I just got a pen gate and closed off the steps down and she could stay out there... I gave her a big plush cushion and water and she was fine. Otherwise I would have had to lock her in the barn and that would not have made her happy!

I think you'd be safe in a tank but nothing else.

Rosaboobie, I looked back at the first few pages of this thread and it was a nice walk down memory lane... posts from Siobhan, Hawkavonpuka and The Black Dahlia... all good friends who have passed away.
