Leaving Internet cable modems on all the time?
Leaving Internet cable modems on all the time?
This may be a silly question but do you all tend to leave your cable modems on all the time? I leave the fridge on all the time, I can see a reason to do that, but the cable modem and router I power off when it’s not going to be used for a few hours.

I always keep mine on. It's easier.

Mine is always on. No real reason to turn it off and on. Mine takes a couple of minutes to boot up and that would be a PAIN!

Mine stays on all the time. My phone connects to the wifi, so if I want to use the internet in the middle of the night it's nicer not to have to get up!

I am an insomniac so I leave it on all the time, in case I need it in the night. The only time I do unplug it is when lightning or a storm is forecast - so many routers have been fried on Sanday in the past year, but then I do have spares ha ha.

OK I can see I’m the odd one out!

If I unplugged the Internet cable I'd have no phone.

I leave it on but the subject got me thinking:
On average I'd guess I'm on-line four hours per day, mostly streaming video in the PM. That leaves 20 hours per day that the modem and router are on just doing the usual glowing and blinking. Let's see, according to energyusecalculator.com a typical cable modem and router use about six watts apiece. OK @ 15 cents/Kwhr ...... that's $1.10 USD per month, approximately 1% of the total electric bill which surprises me a little. Better not mention this to the bill payer.

That does surprise me a little too... But in the total of my electric bill, that's pretty paltry.

Mine is always on. It's more convenient that way for me.
