Does anyone have a good password manager program? I have been trying quite a few but invariably they tell me what the terminology is, what things do but, for me at least, they fail to tell my HOW to use their program, how to put in passwords for management etc. I need the step by step 'how to' as well as the 'what is'.

Also had one program all set up but never could get around having to forever put in the master password every time I tried to access a site. Might as well put in the site's password. Despite tech help could never get around this problem so reluctantly uninstalled the program. It was a free program so maybe if I had paid would have gotten more tech support or clearer instructions? Appreciate anyone's experience with such.

I know you had problems with Roboform, but I love it. I get to decide which sites require the master password and which ones do not. In fact, when I recently had to reinstall my Windows 7, the first thing I got back up and running was my Roboform. Downloaded the backup file from Carbonite and all my passwords were there.

One of the people at the Smart Computing magazine Q & A forums recommended the free Last Pass. This is a link to the users manual... read some of the links on the right side and see if it explains things well enough for you. Last Pass User's Manual

Hopefully someone will have some suggestions that might work for you.

Maybe it is me draclvr, but I went to the user manual and again they describe the program, talk about how easy it is, what it does for one but again not how to use it, how to put passwords in. After I stumbled around a good deal when I tried Last Pass and did get some passwords in the manager program I never got past having to insert the master password much of the time. As I said if I have to do that all the time then maybe I am misunderstanding these programs. Maybe one does have to do that and that is what saves remembering numerous password over just one password? I was thinking if one's passwords were stored then the manager just remembered and accessed them and one never had too?

Surely am missing something about PW manager programs.

Did you look through the links on the right like I mentioned? It tells you how to import passwords, how to create passwords, how to add a site, how to edit a site, how to add sites automatically or manually, etc. The thing I liked about this user's manual is that is has our favorite thing - pictures! There is a ton of detail on how to use it, how to put passwords in and add them to groups or favorites if you want.

If you were having to enter a master password, then that is the way you set up the website. All you have to do is go in to each of the sites and edit them. For instance, this is the page for editing a site... Editing an Existing Site Entry

I do know there are some websites that do not allow you to use the "autofill" in some password managers. For those, I just go to my Login list, right click the website and select edit. That tells me what the password is and I manually enter it.

Now will look again draclvr. I missed something here am sure. Should be working on this in the AM. By night time, the day has worn me out with its problems. But will go peek again.

There is even a video tutorial under the Adding a Site heading. Adding a Site

I just don't think you're going to be able to get away from doing some digging in any user's manual to figure out the tricks in any password manager. Although they all have different interfaces, they pretty much operate the same way. The Last Pass user's manual is one of the better ones for actually telling you how to use the software and even providing pictures and videos on the how-to's. I don't use it, so I can't be a lot of help other than reading the manual details.

Hmmm - now please explain to this very confused person why exactly you need a Password Manager?? For added security reasons?? I just let Windows sort me out!

Well Rosab. I have 41 sites that I visit and each has a differing password. Now who in tarnation can remember all of those. I do have all of them typed and on paper but it is a pain in the patootie to have to drag the papers out and search for the password I want even though they are in alphabetical order. A password manager program handles all of that so when I want to go on a site, some will have a list of all my sites, I just click on the site and the PW Mgr. opens it up for me.

No more dragging out the papers and searching for the log on ID and PW. Now I just have to get myself in control and learn how to use a password mgr. program and not lose patience with it and get frustrated. The older I get, the harder that is to do. Sigh

I am also not very good at following or reading instructions lately, BD - so you are in good company, my friend

I have been using the old notebook trick but it is becoming a giant mess. When I went to Oahu I keep a list of user names and passwords on my phone so only have to remember my phone password. If one was using someone elses computer then you wouldn't have access with either of these programs or would you?

These password managers are pretty much like a notebook - they store your passwords for you so you can easily retrieve them. They also allow you to protect certain sensitive website login information with a Master Password which is not stored in the program. That's the one you keep in your head - or write down. So essentially you only have to remember one password.

All of them are resident on your computer, so it you needed to access a website from another computer you would need to have the login information with you. Roboform to Go does allow you to sync password and login information to all your devices.
