The last two days have had a problem with sound. Since I have birds I often put the tiny volume screen on whatever video I am watching or program I am downloading to monitor the sound lest it scare the birds and send them flying about the room.

For some reason the little screen showing the Master Volume slider will not go above 5 notches. I usually keep it full strength but it will not go to the top and stay there. Drops back 3-4 notches all the time.

Have tried going to Control Panel, Sound And Audio Devices, then the Volume tab, to raise the volume there, but it too jumps back to not quite midway. Have not been doing anything out of the ordinary that I am aware of to cause such, and have not changed my PC habits.

This has been occurring the last 3 -4 days now.

Anyone have an idea what might cause this?

She has on-board sound, Faust. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA, but I don't remember which one. So, you actually have sound, you just can't change the volume on the master control? If you turn up the volume on the speakers themselves, does that work?

Yes, the speakers work just fine. If I have to resort to them, will have to do a bit of rearranging of desk stuff. That is the reason I liked using the sound icon on taskbar - so easy and convenient to get to plus like my desk arrangement as is. Sigh

That may be your best bet , using the volume of the speakers . Myself , I set the volume on my task bar at 85% , then control overall volume with my speaker's control pod .

I'm wondering if an update of your sound card drivers might help.

I was about to consider an update of sound card and this AM when I went on PC and tried the icon out of habit - it is now functioning OK! Rats - will computers ever quit trying to outwit humans?! I suppose in the future now it might happen again and I will never know the whys and wherefores - grrrrrrrr

BD, I believe there's a statistic somewhere that says 99% of all computer problems can be fixed by doing a reboot! What I tell people is that sometimes it's just best to not even try to figure it out.

You're kidding me? They really teach it? That's amazing! I've been thinking about you and wondering how the classes are going?

I've told you my older son did the 2-year IT program at East Central. He got an unpaid internship at WashPC and REALLY learned a lot there. The owner hired him after the internship was over. He's finishing up the degree down at Webster University - I'm thinking he only has 1 semester left after this one. He got a 3-month paid internship at a huge marketing company in St. Louis and they liked his work so well, they just hired him full time last week! Woo hoo! A real salary, benefits and all that! He told them that finishing up his degree is his first priority and they have no problem working with him on it. He hated to leave WashPC as he really liked it there, but they just couldn't pay enough and he's more interested in doing enterprise level work anyway. If you haven't been to WashPC yet, you should make a trip over there. They are on Jefferson and Wainwright. I don't think the owner is even 30 yet. They have a Facebook page too. There are some pictures on there that I took when they had their grand opening earlier this summer. My son is the tall one on the left.

I remember you telling me about your son . Congrats on hime landing the new job ! Ultimately , I would like to land a similar situation , being on an enterprise level , but at the same time , being in the trenches would work just as well . I've got a WashPC business card , but I've yet to make it over there . Is it near Franklin County Glass , or is it near Bank of Washington ? I may just go there on Thursday . I may get lucky , if you get my meaning . I'm going to be taking my second final next Monday . I just talked to my instructor about it . Emilie has been bugging me quite often about returning to Longmeadow . Little stinker !

It's on Jefferson and Wainwright which is down at the bottom of the street and across from the VFW and the Brewery - or whatever they call it. A Dairy Creme or some such fast food is catty corner across from Wainwright too. The website has directions. WashPC

Click on Services and one of the links is Meet Our Team. That's the picture I took.
