There's a particular web-page that crashes my IE 8 browser every single time I try to load it. The page use to load fine, allbeit rather slow, but now it just hangs my browser. Could I get some of you nice folks who have IE 8 to check the web-page and see if it'll load for you?

Here's a direct link to the page that hangs my browser, please use Internet Explorer version 8.0. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Gra ... 844.0.html

If you're not sure what version of Internet Explorer you have, just open it and click "Help"-->About Internet Explorer.

Let me fire up my XP computer and see what happens.

Thanks, Draclvr :)

I was hoping the problem was an outdated version of Java, so I updated it, but no joy, still hangs on me.

EDIT: I found a way to copy the link. Here is a direct link to the web-page that hangs my IE 8 browser.. www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-C ... 844.0.html

I've been in and out of the site and the link several times and even after a reboot each time it acts kind of "herky-jerky" if that makes any sense. It doesn't crash IE8 or even hang up, but scrolling is not smooth and it took longer than I thought it should to load the page. I tried a couple of other links and they didn't exhibit the same behavior.

Spoke too soon - clicked on the Computer Games on Laptops link and it's hanging up "waiting for http......." It's been about 3 minutes and IE8 finally went to a blank white page.

Switched over to the other computer and NotebookCheck.net loaded in a snap in both IE9 and Firefox. Every link also loaded instantly. Switched back to the XP computer and IE8 is still hung up. Tried Firefox on the XP computer - everything loaded and I was able to click on links with no hang-ups. It's much slower than the other computer, but everything worked fine.

Just checked again and IE8 finally loaded the Computer Games on Laptops. I think it was hung up for at least 4 or 5 minutes. I'm typing this on the XP computer in Firefox.

Thanks Drac, but the only web-page I'm interested in is the one I directed you to (which I've now edited to include a direct link to the problematic page), which is the Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List .

Just to make sure I'm reading you, you say the link to the Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List loads without hanging your browser, but it lags when you try to scroll, is that correct ??

EDIT:

That page hangs the browser the exact same way as the other page. It goes to a blank page, then nothing, then if I try to click anywhere in my toolbar, my cursor turns into an hourglass, and Internet Explorer in the top margin of the window says "not responding".

That's correct. I know that's the only one you were interested in, but I wanted to see if any of the other pages would exhibit the same behavior and they do.

I also just tried going there directly from your link and got the same thing... took a bit long to load and even after it was fully loaded, scrolling was jerky and inconsistent in IE8.

I tried the "gaming page" just now, and hangs on me the same as the other page. The homepage loads just fine. It's a shame, cuz there's some very valueable information on those pages we're trying to get to.

Did you say the pages load and perform just fine with Firefox on the XP computer??

Yes, they do. And to be sure, I just checked again and they loaded and acted like you want them to.

That is a great site, by the way!

Yes, it is a good site for comparing laptop GPUs. I had a brainstorm and decided to update my video card driver. A couple of weeks ago I accidentally stepped in a big ol' pile of malware, and boy was it MAL-ICIOUS, so I used the Dell PC Restore by Symantec to restore the machine to it's factory state, which reverted me back to the old 2004 video driver...and re-installed all of the bloatware that came with it, so after I went through the tedious and time consuming process of deleting the bloatware, and re-installing all of the Windows Updates, I had totally forgotten about the old video driver. I can now load the page I wanted. It takes about a minute or so to load, then another 30 seconds or so before I can scroll, but once it's fully loaded, it scrolls fine, with no lag at all.

EDIT: ha,ha,ha I spoke too soon, it's still running crappy, but at least it'll load.

Yup. I had that happen a couple of times too - after it would sit there for awhile, it would work. Then the next minute it would act all jerky and slow. But didn't have any of the issues on the XP with Firefox. Strange.

Sounds like you definitely stepped into a really crappy "pile!" Glad you got it sorted out.

I actually did something very foolish. I should have known better, and I DID know better, but for some reason I did it anyway.

I had used the utility at the USPS web-site to have my mail carrier pick up a package for shippment (returning my DirectTV Receiver after switching to AT&T U-Verse). The package was too big for my mailbox, so I instructed them to knock on the door.

Anyway, a few days later I get this e-mail in my SPAM folder that said it was from USPS, with the subject line saying "delivery failed" or something like that. So I opened it, and it says "your package could not be delivered", download and fill out the attached form and bring it to your local post office. So, like a great ole' big dumbass I click on the attachment and downloaded it....then when I opened it...whammo, my computer went berserk. This bogus anti-spyware started running, scanning my system, and I couldn't turn it off, so I quickly went to task manager and killed the process, but it was too late.

They got me good, caught me with by britches down, as I was concerned about returning that DirectTV receiver.

Yeah, that one is everywhere right now. I got one too and right around the time I had ordered something. Fortunately, my package had been delivered the day before. My older son is working part time at a computer repair shop while he finishes up his BS in IT. He told me they get several computers a week totally trashed by the USPS scam.

Yikes, glad I heard about this as I have a couple of packages on the way, of course I have been paying absolutely no attention to my email except to delete almost everything.

That e-mail being delivered directly to my SPAM folder should have sent up a red flag. If I had just Googled it first, I wouldn't have opened it.

used keywords "bogus email attachment from USPS" returned these two hits....

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Fake-Uni ... 8465.shtml

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Fake-USP ... 1564.shtml

Google turned up several other articles about it, those were just the top two.

Do NOT open the attachment if you get one of those, Judy.

Well, there it is. I just downloaded and installed Firefox and now those pages load and work just fine. That web-site must have been designed by a Firefox fanboy. It's been made to sabotage IE browsers. That has to be what it is, cuz all other web-sites work just fine.
