I have no trouble getting on the internet with my desktop computer, but when my hubby tries to get on the internet at the same time with his laptop, I can't get on the internet for about 5 minutes, and he can't get on the internet either. finally after about 5 minutes he can get on and my desktop computer can get on the internet too. He thinks we need a new router. I am thinking maybe I have his laptop settings messed up and because of this it is taking so long. Do we need a new router, or do I need to change the internet setup on his laptop? Thanks.

What do you have for your ISP? Is it DSL or what? What kind of speeds are you supposed to be getting? Is your setup wired or wireless or perhaps wired for the desktop and wireless for the laptop? What kind of router do you have?

We have family from Germany and my step-daughter from the DC area visiting right how. Almost every day there is a time when I am here on my desktop and Petra and Claudia are both on their laptops and we have no problems. The only time there was an issue was when I was downloading something and Petra turned on her laptop and it was taking forever to connect. I paused the download and then all was well. There is only so much bandwidth available and my download was hogging it.

It may be your router, Mbday. Sometimes it just has to be switched off and on to be recycled, and sometimes it needs a signal boost from your internet provider. We had to do that a lot with our old router, but not with the new one we got several years ago. We run 2 or 3 computers, including a laptop, via Comcast broadband (now called Xfinity). All of them are wired and use different jacks.

ah, I think that would be the easy thing to try, to reboot the router. I never heard of RoadRunner giving a signal boost, but, maybe that is an option too.

I have Road Runner high speed internet. I don't know what kind of speeds I should be getting, other than on my bill it says high speed internet. It is wired for the desktop and of course wireless for the laptop. If I am not on the internet, the laptop can get on the internet really fast, but, if we are on it together, then I can't get on for a long time and neither can the laptop user. I think I will try to reboot the router. I kept telling hubby that since we were able to get on the internet eventually that it wasn't the router. Just very annoying when he has to try to get on the internet 20 times before he can finally get on.

thanks.

OK, that all helps. I would definitely reboot the router to see if that helps. Are you both running the same Operating System? That won't make any difference in the issue, but there are different procedures for settings. I would also definitely call Road Runner... did they supply the router or is it one you purchased yourselves? It does sound like something is not letting the computers "talk" to the internet connection. See what Road Runner has to say for sure.
