If there is a Recovery partition, it will be hidden anyway. So you are able to boot into Windows, but it's just running in Safe Mode, right? You might try running a chkdsk to see if there are bad sectors on the disk. Open a cmd prompt and type in chkdsk C:/f

Instructions are here. Use the second option to repair. Chkdsk

Are you saying you found the Recovery Disks? Because if you have them, then yes, you can run them from Safe Mode.

No, I have not found the Recovery Disks. In fact I don't ever remember making Recovery Disks for this laptop. I mistakenly thought that the Recovery Disks had come with the laptop, but obviously not.

What I am asking is - Can I now create those Recovery Disks now, whilst only running in Safe Mode?

Good question... I don't know. Let me see what I can find out.

EDIT: Answer is.. maybe. It seems to depend on the manufacturer. Some answers say yes and some say no. Check in your User's Manual to see how to do it when NOT in Safe Mode and give it a try. The problem is that Safe Mode only loads basic, minimum drivers, so it may not create all the requisite drivers for your motherboard. I'm just not sure.

But there is no point in doing that if you haven't made sure the disk is OK and it's not disk errors that are causing the problem to begin with. Have you run the chkdsk yet?

No, not yet - I will run Chkdsk first thing tomorrow morning, Drac, when my head is clearer!

It does not say in the manual how to create these Recovery Disks - most strange!

Wow, most strange indeed. I'll be anxious to see if running chkdsk finds bad sectors on the hard drive. We couldn't be so lucky as to have it all fixed by letting chkdsk do the repairs!

Not that I remember on this laptop... but then that would be saying I actually remember anything anymore! But, no, not on this one anyway.

Rosaboobie, I found the sections on using the eRecovery Management tool for your laptop on pages 11 and 74 in your manual on-line. But I would still make sure you run the chkdsk first to be sure you don't have other problems. eRecovery is in your All Programs section.

Also check these out... They may or may not work with your model.

How to use eRecovery to Create Backup Disks

How to Restore Using eRecovery

Ok, I ran chkdsk and this is what it said:-

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? Y/N?

So I say yes, restart the laptop, try to run Chkdsk again, and I just keep getting the same error message!!

HELP!!!

I am putting the extra space in, just like the link says, Winfrey, but I am still getting the exact same error message!

Hi again,
The steps given in the Link below are similar to the ones Winfrey gave you, but this one Starts even before you go into Windows via Safe Mode, who knows, maybe this one (cross my fingers) will work for you.

http://www.sensible-computer-help.com/safe-mode.html

Good luck

Ok, I followed your link, Ray, and now it won't even start up in Safe Mode. It just stops loading half way through and the black screen with the white writing just hangs..................

Where it says "Type Y for yes, and press enter. Then reboot the computer into normal mode." I could not reboot but simply had to switch it off from the big button!

Where it says "Chkdsk will start when Windows begins loading again" - Once again the system just froze while trying to load Windows, and the laptop switched itself off!

I'm not sure what is going on with this computer, but that shouldn't have happened with those simple instructions.

Rosaboobie, I'm going to pose a question about your computer over at a tech forum I hang out at and see if they have any suggestions. If it was me, at this point I'd just get a new hard drive and install Windows 7 on it, I'd be so frustrated! I know you don't trust the computer repair place, but really, that might be the only thing to do. The computer is definitely worth getting up and running, as it's a nice one.

Is there absolutely NO way that I can just format this laptop and somehow reinstall the drivers??

No, there are no laptop techies in Kenya. It will just have to sit here "dead" until I leave, I am afraid.
