My daughter had asked to borrow one of my games that was like The Longest Journey. I gave her Gray Matter.... don't think that is too similar, but I think she might like it...

so, I decided to play The Longest Journey again and after a little tweaking making it windows 98 compatible (It wouldn't play after the first install saying something like it wasn't compatible with 32 something) I finally got it to play after reinstalling and making the exe. file compatible with windows 98 and the install icon compatible with windows 98. everything was going smoothly and I was able to switch to disk 2 without any problems. now though when I try to load up the game (and I put in the first disk) and try to click on "continue game" I get an error message and it won't start up. then I went back to an old saved right before the disk swapping and when I came to putting in the second disk I got an error message again. I downloaded a patch for this game, but it said it was only for game crashes. any idea on how to get this to keep going? thanks.

Can you tell us what the error message says - preferably word for word?

Just another thought after you answer draclvr's question:

You should use the NoCD fix and you will not have to worry about switching CDs.

I'm thinking that's where we'll end up, Ray. I've never used it, so stick around so you can help mbday if that's what she ends up needing! I played in on my XP computer without any problems at all.

I have never used the no cd fix. I will look that up and see if that works. like I said, everything was working smoothly until switching the cd's. thanks for the advice.

as for giving the error message word for word, I will try. but I get two different error messages today. one of the error messages was from the desktop icon that I put on and the other was from the switching disks. I will get on that after I look up this no cd fix thing. thanks all!

Try this one, mbday.

I have to leave to go bowling, but hopefully Ray can help you out.

If I can be of further help, no problem, sorry I had to leave right after my 1st post but with my minor eye problems + my allergies are at it's worst this year and my eyes really get dry quickly and I have to take more breaks than before.

PS: I thought allergies were supposed to ease up as one gets older? Ha?
Oh and dracvlr, I hope you had a good game of bowling, been more than 20 years since I last played.....

Maybe worth watching out in case GOG put the game in a sale any time soon - their version would require no CD and come ready tweaked to run on modern systems.

I put it in this morning and tried again and voila! it worked. however now when I go into the police station it crashes. I downloaded the patch that was supposed to fix the game crashes but when I try to unzip it, it says "could not find the 2003 release of the Longest Journey in the specified directory." I put the patch right in the same folder as the game, so don't know what I am doing wrong. I think Phlebas was right and it would be best just to get it on GOG or something. thanks.

Hopefully I found the problem. I have the 4 CD version and the patch is for the 2 CD version. Someone on a forum said that in the first disk there is a patch for the game that works for the police station crash, so I just installed that and hopefully it will work now.

Nope. There was something called TLJRegFix.exe and I thought that would be the patch for it. I couldn't see anything else that looked "patchy" but it still crashes at the police station. If anyone finds the patch anywhere, please let me know. otherwise, I will wait until I can afford it on GOG or Steam. Thanks.

whoot whooot!! I found this site: http://www.gameboomers.com/forum/ubbthr ... ches?.html

and I unchecked the 3d acceleration and I am in the police station without a crash. I immediately saved it and hopefully I can keep on going! Thank you!
