I am trying to copy my Simon the Sorcerer 5 game (now that I finally got the unlock key to work and don't want to have to go through that again) and I have a tsst corp dvd +-rw ts-h553A dvd drive. I bought some DVD-R disks to copy it onto, but, it keeps telling me that isn't the right disk. What kind of disks do I have to buy in order to download this game onto a disk? Thanks.

What burning program are you using?

It is the one that came with the computer, called Roxio.

I also want to make sure we're talking about the same thing - it might sound nit-picky, but it's really important to be sure there is no confusion about what you are trying to do. First you said you want to "copy" the game and then you said you want to "download" to a disk. What you need to be doing is "burning" the game to the disk. Then you need to be sure you are burning the correct file. You say it's a downloaded game, so what you need to be burning is the download not the installed game.

I've found a lot of information about the drive and I'm curious that it is listed as strictly a +/- RW drive. The fact that you're using an R DVD instead of an RW DVD might be the problem.

I downloaded the game, and now I want to copy it onto a disk so that I don't have this trouble with unlocking it again in the future. so... it's a downloaded game now, but, I could re-download it and put it on a disk, if I had the right disk. so, if I would buy the RW DVD disk that would fix it? I don't understand the +/- stuff, so when I bought these disks I just assumed they would work.... but, guess not. I will put those disks on my grocery list. Thanks for your help.

I'm not real savvy on all that + and - stuff either. I remember when each protocol was trying to be THE one, but they finally gave up and most burners now can work with both of them. Your burner is "supposed" to be able to use +/- R disks, so I don't know why it isn't seeing your disk. One thing you might try is formatting the disk... there should be an option to do that in your Roxio. You also might try right clicking on your DVD drive with the disk in it and see if you get an option for format the disk.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but if this is a game that requires unlocking after installating it, you are ALWAYS going to have to unlock it when you reinstall it on another computer, and possibly also on the same computer. The activation information is not kept in the game folder.

Also, depending on the size of the game folder, it may not fit on a DVD.
Which game is this?

The file is only a tad over 1 GB, so there should be no problems with it fitting on a DVD. Oops, sorry, she said in her first post it was Simon the Sorcerer 5.

Also, what middletoe said is true. As I said, you can probably burn the download to a DVD, but not the game itself after it's installed. You will always have to unlock this game.

I went to a site where they had the unlock thingy on their site and I just had to switch their file for the file that was in the folder and now it works. that is why I would like to burn it now, so I don't have to do that research and changing stuff again. BTW, what is DLA? There wasn't an option to do a format for the D drive, (open, explore, search, auto play, use with DLA, eject, copy, create shortcut, and properties) and I tried the DLA thing but, couldn't get anywhere with that. so, back to what you said earlier, if I get the right DVD disks I should be able to put this on a disk? I was hoping there was some way to make this work with these DVD-R disks that I already have.

I forget, but you are still using XP, right? The option to format might be available in the context menu - I can't remember for sure. Do you get the option in your Roxio? I just have no idea why it won't use you -R disk and whether it will be happier with an RW disk.

Had to look up the DLA thing - it means Drive Letter Access and I have no idea what it's for!

Yes, I am still using XP. it might be a different computer though from what I told you before, I exchanged with my daughter... lots of different computers in my house.

I haven't looked at my Roxio folder to see if there is a way there to format the disk. I'll poke around and see. I think I will buy just a cheapo box of those disks and see if they work too. I have never had a single one of these DVD disks work for me yet. i have tried putting my pictures on them too, and it always says that the disk isn't right, or full, or something, but, just doesn't work. argh. thanks again.

Just to add what has been said, how Old is your Roxio? You said it came with your XP computer, were you successful in the past in Burning a DVD with that Roxio software?
The reason I ask is because a buddy of mine had Roxio with his XP purchase awhile back and because of its age, it did not have the ability to Burn DVDs, just CDs, so eventhough you have a DVD burner, you may need an updated Roxio or download a Free DVD burner.

Good luck with your burning quest..

Good info, Ray, thanks. I don't use Roxio or Dell computers, so I didn't know that. I don't know how old this computer is, but the info I found on the optical drive is that it is from 2006.

Thanks for the advice. I am supposed to have a DVD burner, but, it is only able to burn CDs and they aren't large enough for this game. I don't have any problem putting things or games on a regular CD-R disk. You said that I may need an updated Roxio or download a Free DVD burner. Where can I find a free DVD burner download? Maybe I will look at the Roxio website and see if they have any tips.

Now you're really got me confused! You say you don't have a DVD burner, but you list your drive as a tsst dvd +-rw ts-h553A which is definitely a DVD burner. Or are you talking about your software? What version of Roxio do you have? I looked on the Dell website and it is supposed to be able to burn DVDs.

You can try Express Burn - it's a pretty good free burning software program. Plus, it's very easy to use.

Express Burn Free
