It's not hard to spend a lot of time wandering around here!

Hey, I should get to vote again. I left the "majority" last fall and entered into the next eschalon!

The good thing about 60 + 8 months is that I'm now only 13 months and 20 days from retirement!

Retirement is a figment of ones imagination, it is only that you will no longer have a "real" job or paycheck. :rofl

Most of my time seems to belong to everyone else and I have three more of them coming for three weeks this summer. Mostly I wish my husband would "unretire" or get a full-time hobby, that would work.

The secret is Hawka, build a garden toolshed/glasshouse and in my husband's case, a room for
his model trains. Next step, ask him to do a job for you and the guaranteed answer will be,
" Of course, just as soon as I fininsh this other little job out here."
Result, two to three hours peace, of course the job never gets done but what the heck, you can't have
everything. :D

My husband has always been able to entertain himself, thank goodness. Like the Doozers in Fraggle Rock, he's always making something, or else he's out and about on his motorcycle.

That would never happen Jude, he is completely computer illiterate and doesn't care to learn.
He does go hunting or diving with the grandsons, not often enough for my taste. Does his little projects in the garage, but they are loud and I am a person that loves quiet. So I have learned to read with background noise and use headphones when on the computer. Maybe someday I will get used to that, but I doubt it. From him working six days a week to this is hard on me, plus when we moved we downsized to a studio downstairs so my daughter and her two kids could have the upstairs. Such is life, summer is coming so maybe he will do more with our grandsons.

I have an mp3 player and I bought a set of the in-ear headphones. Some of them are extremely expensive, but Sony and V-Moda make some good ones that are more reasonably priced:
http://www.v-moda.com/collection/modaph ... 0freq.aspx
or search for
Sony MDR-EX71SLA Fontopia Bud-Style Headphones.

The cool thing about these headphones is that they block much of sound around you without having to blast your ears since they fit in your ears like soft earplugs. Usually they come with several sizes of bud attachment, so you can choose one that makes a good fit for your ear. You can plug them into the headphone jack of your computer, too.

I hate noise, too, and my neighborhood has repopulated itself with inconsiderate dog-and-kid owners.

Also, for sleeping, try the soft foam earplugs (not the wax!) that you can find boxes of in most drug stores. You roll the earplug between your fingers before inserting it and then it expands to shape to your ear canal. Works pretty well, and still lets you hear a loud alarm or someone yelling at you.

Seriously, take some action to protect your nerves now, before you get futzy from all the noise.

I am going to look more at those ear buds, I didn't think they would cancel out outside noise. The headphones I have now are comfy, they do block out alot, more so when I turn them on. Of course I have to yank them off when anyone (fools that they are) talk to me. We live in a rural area and back up to a cow pasture so it is really quiet at night and really dark. Nothing there to stress me out and I don't think I could handle the foam in my ears. The noisy one uses them at night, why I don't know since it is quiet. I do most of my reading late at night, just because it is so quiet, I love it. Even Armalia my goat is quiet at night, but she has really good hearing and eyesight and once I am up in the morning she knows it. Baaa Baaa!

Thanks for the info Jude.

No, don't get "noise cancelling" headphones, because they actually make noise (white noise--like a waterfall--which drives me nuts). The in-ear headphones actually just fit in the ear canal so well that it is like wearing ear plugs (but loud sounds can still be heard unless the music covers them up). The one problem with them (just like with earplugs) is that you have to get used to hearing yourself breathing and if something rubs against them it is loud! It's a good idea to put rubbing alcohol in your ears and then dry them well before using the earphones/earplugs to ensure a good quiet fit without slippage.

I'm a nightowl, too. It's much quieter at night and less people bother me. I sleep in the mornings (with earplugs) and thus sleep through the most annoying part of the day (for me, anyway).

I am a nightowl also, well maybe a wannabe one since I am now forced to get up early, yuck. I used to work nights at Dominos Pizza closing the store and it was perfect for me. Get home anywhere from 12 - 2 am, then stay up for a couple more hours on my ancient computer, or carrying my grandson watching all the Animal Planet shows. Anyway, Costco sent out a coupon booklet and they have in it V-Moda Vibe Ear Buds, I don't know the price cause I can't find them on the online site. Says "High definition noise isolating ear buds, alloy metal construction, 24K gold plated 3.5 mm jack, 3 sizes of soft silicon ear tips". The ones I have now are comfy, have the "white noise" but I usually don't turn on the switch. I can hear, but sounds are muffled and am able to concentrate on the games. I will take a look at them on Sunday when we go down to Kona.

I think Amazon has the Sony MDR-EX71SLA Fontopia earbuds for about $35, too. They are what I've been using with my MP3 player, but my partner likes the V-Moda earbuds because she got the ones with the extra bass. I tend to like the "pure" sound headphones. I figure I can always use an equalizer to adjust bass and treble if I really want to. Anyway, there are a lot of other in-ear headphones. I just mentioned those two because I am familiar with them and they are relatively cheap compared to some of the really nice ones that can cost a couple of hundred dollars!

I also have a pair of excellent regular over-the-ear headphones that I use for sound recording and editing:
Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs
