All power went last night at 6 p.m. Managed to get an electrician here at midday today - turns out my kettle was faulty and RCDs so sensitive that it blew out the power on the whole of the house.

Then this morning I realised that there was NO water getting through into my bathroom - no cold water coming from the taps or the toilet cistern.

And don't even ask about the paint work in the conservatory and study................

OK, you're going to have to help me out here - what is a kettle and what are RCD's?

Maybe this will make you feel better - this is my hometown in NW Iowa. They have been without power since Tuesday night and aren't expecting it to be back on until next Tuesday and maybe even later that that. And it's VERY, VERY cold up there too. My nieces took their 6 kids and went to a hotel in Sioux Falls, South Dakota which is about 17 miles away. The skid loader you see moving snow and ice is my nephew Josh.

Larchwood, Iowa

I would call it a tea or coffee brewer. Or an electric kettle! We are definitely talking about the same thing, but that's just not what I saw in my head when you said kettle. This is what I see when I say kettle... pretty much the same thing! But I still don't know what an RCD is.

RCD = Residual Current Device. It detects if current is flowing potentially through you to earth and shuts the power off if so.

Hope you get back to normal quickly RB! And I feel for your relatives up in Iowa, Draclvr, that's not pleasant at all.

Now I have to ask about the paint work.... not the color you wanted? I thought the colors you picked out were awesome.

Thank you, Kickaha! I have never heard of this one.

And, yes, now on to the paint, Rosaboobie... I know you said "don't ask," but I hope it isn't too horrible!

Could the faulty electric supply have affected your water pump? I assume your water comes from a well. One can manage without electricity but not without water!

It's ok, Diat, fortunately I have 2 bathrooms, and would you believe I am on mains water, so no water pump. It wasn't a faulty electrical supply - it did what it is meant to do - I believe that is the whole point of the RCD's - it's a safety measure.

I have to be very very careful what I say on this Board, because I know full well that some Sanday residents have been snooping on here in the past in relation to my postings, and I have unknowingly made enemies. PM me if you really are interested

What I can say is - I get no luck with this painting - Painters opened the second tin of emulsion on Wednesday and did some touching up - When dried we all realised the second tin was nowhere near the same shade as the first tin - so now all my conservatory walls are different shades LOL! How on earth can this have happened when it was all mixed by the same machine on the same day??

That's odd, RB, the only things you've ever said about Sanday have been full of praise for the island and the people.

That's what I was thinking - nothing but praise. Well, except for your initial experience while renting...
